1. Project objectives (no more
than 10 lines)
|
The objective is to investigate the velocity field and shape of interface
of high Reynolds number axisymmetric gravity currents of fixed volume (lock
release) that propagate at the bottom of a stratified ambient in a rotating
frame. A theoretical approach to the problem is developed in parallel to the
experimental study, and comparisons are expected to provide important
insights and verifications. |
2. Main achievements and
difficulties encountered (no more than 20 lines)
|
The experiments have been performed and we are processing the data. No
special difficulties were encountered. Our experiment was the
first after the (very sucessful, in our opinion) upgrade of the laboratory
building and rotating tank, and hence some normal (in the circumstances)
problems of calibrations appeared. However, the team was very patient and
helpful. Overall, the number of runs we performed was smaller than planned due
to the tight schedule (13 operating days) and an unexplored parameter range
remains to be covered in a second stage. |
